VERY IMPORTANT is the step number 3!
1. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
For works monitor driver you can delete this file, because intel driver detect that resolutions himself, but for works window managers you can't delete it and should edit this.
As for me any changes here, and playing with 915resolution don't take affect.

hi, I am using HP w2207h and GA945GC main board(DMA 950), and I got the similar widescreen problem in ubuntu.
I have installed both the Intel driver(now the vol. is higher than you give) in source and the one you give. I have succsesfully set my screen resolution to 1680x1050@60, but the problem is the display can not fill my monitor.
Do you have any suggestion?
I've got a SyncMaster215TW
Once I did the above my monitor didn't display correctly on login as gnome default mode 1280x1024.
I had to boot up and select session - (failsafe terminal) and then use gnome-control-center to manually update my session to be 1680x1050.
Then it worked perfectly :)
The Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 haven't such problems.
hey i m using ubuntu 8.10 intrepid ibex. My motherboard is D945GCL...i put the code the same way as you have mentioned just changing the motherboard no. only. and I havent put the steps BUSID: PCI....
and also that OPTION: DPMS.....
the rest is all same and i installed the package which is there in my repos. But still i don't get it.. Plz reply soon
I cannot install 8.10 intrepid due to problems with installation process (not found my hard disk volume).
If resolution 1680x1050 doesn't diplay remove virtual monitor from your conf.
